What is Jailbreak

What is Unlock, Jailbreak, Cydia, Jailbreaking tools and more… Here is an introduction to the jailbreak world.

What Is Jailbreaking?

iOS jailbreaking, or simply jailbreaking, is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system through the use of custom kernels. Such devices include the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and 2nd Gen Apple TV. Jailbreaking allows users to gain root access to the operating system, allowing iOS users to download additional applications, extensions and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store.

                                              What Is Cydia?

Cydia, It’s a third party app which has been developed by the well known iOS developer Jay Freeman (Saurik). The app is very much like Apple app store but even better as it has themes, tweaks and apps which hasn’t been approved by Apple for some reasons like those apps:
  • An App submitted by Mark Fiore because it ridiculed public figures” (Early 2010)
  • Apps allowing users to donate money to non-profit organization and charities (Late 2010)
  • WikiLeaks App was also banned as it “violated their developer guidelines”.
There is 400,000+ apps on Cydia now, Some of those apps are free and others for a small amount of money. You can pay for the apps on Cydia by Paypal or Amazon gift cards.

What Is Unlock?

The term Unlock refers to the process of unlocking the iOS device which has been locked on a specific network provider. The Unlock depends on the baseband of the iOS device. Some of the basebands can be locked by a software. Some other basebands can be unlocked by a special SIMs like GEVEY SIM and there is some basebands that hasn’t been unlocked till now.

Is Jailbreak Legal?

Yes, Jailbreak is Legal in the US Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. But Apple has announced that Jailbreak “can void the warranty”.

What Is repositories?

The repository Or “repo” for short is an online hub where developers store their apps and tweaks that allows quick and easy access to download and install the apps.

Tethered, Semi Tethered and Untethered Jailbreak:

Tethered Jailbreak: In this kind of jailbreak you will need to connect your device to the PC every time your device reboots or looses power and preform a Tethered Boot with one of the jailbreak tools, Otherwise you will be stuck on the Apple Logo
Untethered Jailbreak: This is the full jailbreak that makes your device able to boot by it self with out the need to connect it to the PC to boot it.
Semi Tethered Jailbreak: This Kind of jailbreak has been introduced lately by the developer, BigBoss which has created a tweak that is installed after you have tethered jailbroken your device making you able to reboot your device with out the need to connect it to the PC but some of the device functions will not work until you connect the device to a PC and preform a tethered boot.

Most Famous Jailbreak and Unlock Tools Now:
Jailbreak Tools:
Redsn0w: This tool is developed by a group of developers called the iPhone Dev Team and is available on both Mac and Windows. Sn0wbreeze: This tool is developed by the well known iPhone Developer iH8sn0w and it’s available only on Windows.
Pwnage Tool: This tool is developed by the iPhone Dev Team and it’s available on Mac OS. The tool creates custom iOS firmware images to user-defined specifications. But this tool has been practically killed as the iPhone Dev Team has updated the Redsn0w tool with the option to make custom IPSW files making you able to update your device without updating your baseband to remain unlocked.
Seas0nPass: This tool is developed by Firecore and it’s made specifically to jailbreak Apple TV.
Unlock Tools:
Ultrasn0w: Ultrasn0w is a tool developed by the iPhone Dev Team. The current supported baseband versions for 3G/3GS for this unlock tool are 4.26.08, 5.11.07, 5.12.01, 5.13.04, and 6.15.00. The only current supported baseband for iPhone 4 GSM is 1.59.00.
